Richard Rorty in his conception of the aesthetic thinking speaks of two seemingly different figures: "the ironist" (or "curious intellectual") who
desires "to embrace more and more possibilities" for
self-enlargement and
self-enrichment and whose life is "the life that seeks to extend its own bound rather than to find its center"; "the strong poet" who
desires in the first place to create himself as a distinctive individual.
